MEMORY LANE 23 December 2019

I dreamt I walked
in memory lane
half-way a sign I saw
‘ not again!’.

Undeterred I tried:
to tear it away
it resisted and said:
‘you once had your day!’

The sky suddenly turned grey
a storm caught my unready face
I heard the creaking of fallen trees
in a neighbouring place.

A tiny bird flew across in swiftness
these words I heard it did say:
‘this is a new world that needs you not
to this peace you don’t belong—just go away!’

A SINKING WORLD 15 March 2020

Even the steel-clad heart
has turned butterfly
the C-virus has torn the world apart
it simply refuses to die-

more value is attached
to enviable rolls of toilet-paper
it has to be daily detached
to comply with the rule of nature-

in its absence just for a moment
what’s the worth of gold or silver?
would living not lose its enjoyment?
where would the paperless run for cover?

Towns and cities are in shutdown
daily life has come to a standstill
nowhere is safety to be found
neither is there a saving pill.

SUPPLICATION 17 April 2020

Grant me:

strength in my weakness

faith in my doubt

patience in my anxiety

comfort in my distress

light as I walk in darkness

the right path when I lose my way

the courage to look at my weaknesses and failings

the will to do good and not to judge others

the respect and love for and goodwill towards my fellow-beings

the compassion to reach out to others’ sufferings

the humility in my every thought and deed

simplicity and contentment

understanding in my perplexities

the gift of saying the right things

the generosity to share my good fortune with others

the insight of not placing myself above others

the courage and tranquillity to face any adversity

the perspicacity of seeing things in their true light

the power to stand up against injustice, cruelty and inhumanity

the open heart to receive grace, love and beauty.

The Seashore of Life 3 July 2020

The Seashore of Life

The seashore of life
is no place to look for treasures
here is but sand and pebbles
tide-battered shells
fragments of mussels
sunbaked seaweeds
fallen leaves, broken twigs
shreds of seared branches
and strange enough
even torn pages
of castaway
goodbye love-letters

a witness
to time’s history
and its ravages
a testament of
mankind’s sad
and silent chapters

if you should walk by
in the dead of night
you would hear
it singing the dirge
of unfulfilled lovers

of perished dreams
of sunken hopes
of painful despairs
in bitter sobs
and muted whispers

feel, oh feel well
the pulse of its melancholy
listen, oh listen
to its wild heart-beats
in wild tremours
imagine, oh image
how it howls
in its raging tempers

enquire, oh enquire
where it nestles

its home is none other
than the deluge
of the tattered heart-
the most tearful metaphor
of all known metaphors.
